Success story

Michel and Chris Ignacio of Quezon City, Philippines have been married for two years. Kris is a full-time housewife while Michel is a nursing student. Kris’ mother is presently supporting them financially. The couple was happy to have conceived twins, Kyle and Kyla. Unfortunately, Pearl developed premature labor prompting premature delivery of the twins. The babies were delivered by cesarean section in a nearby city hospital with subsequent referral to an ophthalmologist for ROP screening. Sadly, both babies developed threshold ROP on both of their eyes and were eventually referred for laser treatment.

The twins were born premature on July 25, 2007 at 31 weeks age of gestation. Birth weights were identical at 1.6 kilograms. They underwent Indirect Laser Treatment on both eyes under Topical Anesthesia at St. Luke’s Medical Center on September 1, 2007 as per Early Treatment for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ETROP) recommendations.

In the last follow up, the twins showed little improvement in both of their left eyes. Possible additional laser treatment was advised but overall, the Laser surgery was partially successful.
