Annual visit of Rotary Club of Canterbury, Australia

For the past 11 years, the Rotary Club of Canterbury, Australia has religiously and faithfully come once a year to the Philippines to do eye screening. They usually come in the month of October and it may not be a coincidence that World Sight Day (an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment) also falls on the month of October. It is usually held on second Thursday of the month.

This year is different though and lots of 'first'. Since they have came and served the people of Negros, Iloilo, Capiz, Guimaras, and Aklan it is time to discover new shores and build new ties. cfpi's role is to choose the places to go and do all the legwork when it comes to coordination, networking, and tapping the people/organizations to partner with us to ensure smooth and successful endeavor. This year we chose Bohol. why Bohol? because it is still part of Visayas and we have an active partner ophthalmologist in the person of Dr. Oliver Yu, and cbm partner, IDEA Philippines which is based there and they can do alongside ear screening with us. It was only last year when we did screening in Aklan that we incorporated ear screening as well. Since cfpi has an ear center, might as well shoot thousands of birds with one stone. Usually when we go out from the comfort zone of our office and do community service the eye and ear teams go together.

So the RC Canterbury team came and we welcomed them in the shores of Tagbilaran and not in the airport of Bacolod this time. They arrived October 12, 2008. Since this is a Rotary thing our own Rotary Club of Bacolod North coordinated with Rotary Club of Tagbilaran to make things easier for us. They contacted the mayors in all the towns that we went to and made sure the people are informed of the weeklong activity. RC Tagbilaran joined us to welcome them and give a ride to Dao Diamond where we stayed for 3 nights.
